The Housing Development Board (HDB) today (Mar 25) announced that they will double the parking fees for delivery vehicles at the loading/unloading bay at 10 popular HDB carparks.

Currently, delivery drivers can only park at the loading/unloading bay free for 15 minutes and they will be charged S$2 for the first and subsequent half hour. This amount will be doubled to S$4 for every half-hour.

The HDB spokesperson said:

“This is to prevent abuse by drivers who park at the bays for a long time, hindering other drivers from using them. As demand for parking is high, there is congestion in these areas and the situation is made worse by motorists who park at the bays illegally. While drivers who do so can be fined by enforcement officers, some remain undeterred. There were also several occasions when motorists continued to park at the bays after delivering their goods. Those who need to carry out loading and unloading activities have resorted to parking along the service road or driveway, creating inconvenience to other motorists and even causing congestion within the estate.”

The HDB spokesperson also added that they will construct new electronic parking system gantries at the 10 popular HDB carparks.

Below is the list of the 10 popular HDB carparks:

  • Tekka Market
  • 2 Geylang Serai
  • 2 Joo Chiat
  • Tampines Central 1
  • 118 Aljunied Avenue 2
  • 335 Kreta Ayer
  • 131/134 Jurong East Street 13
  • 505 Jurong West Street 52
  • Tanjong Pagar Plaza and
  • 6A Everton Road

The move will likely raise business costs and result in higher inflation as businesses pass on the costs to consumers. Earlier in December 2016, HDB raised carpark charges by 40% to increase tax revenues.
