Electricity prices saw its biggest ever jump of 19.1% in May 2017 compared to a year ago. The increase is a result of a 2.4% price increase in gas prices passed by the husband of PAP MP Tin Pei Ling, Ng How Yue.
Ng How Yue is a personal crony of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and was promoted 4 times in 5 years to become the Chairman of the Energy Market Authority.
The worst is yet to come for Singaporeans, with a 30% water price hike coming next week from 1 July 2017. The water prices were increased to pay for additional infrastructural needs for a 6.9 million population target by 2030.
Inflation rate for May more than tripled to 1.4% from 0.4% in April. However, the Ministry of Trade and Industry claimed that the increase “appear more” because government rebates were given in April and not May unlike previous years.
Compared to 2016, food inflated 1.5%, private transport inflated 6.1%, services inflated 1.4% and overall core inflation rate increased by 1.7%.
