Lee Hsien Loong: If Danes can cycle in the winter, why can’t Singaporeans cycle in the tropic?

In his speech at a state dinner with Denmark’s Prime Minister, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that he wants to promote cycling as a mode of transport after he saw Danes cycling in the winter:

“When I visited the Danish capital of Copenhagen in 2009 for a climate change conference, I was struck by the sight of people cycling after sunset in the depths of a freezing winter. I concluded that if the Danes could cycle in winter, Singaporeans must be able to do so in the tropics. Singapore is now working hard to promote cycling as a mode of transport and can learn from Denmark in this area.”

The Singapore dictator has been pushing for a “car-lite” society and recently implemented a zero COE growth policy causing a spike in inflation and business costs. COE prices jumped more than 10% after the announcement of the new policy, with a COE license for a car pushing up to at least S$57,000.

Under Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s transport management has been in a mess with failing public transport infrastructures and unaffordable private transport. Rail reliability is at it’s all-time low despite rose-tinted government statistics claiming “multi-fold” improvements. Beneath the numerous breakdowns underlies a corrupted system where the duopoly cronies, SMRT and SBS Transit, are awarded lucrative transport contracts and given leeway by the regulatory authority.
