Frustrated with the loss of income over motorists who evade parking fees by tailgating, the HDB yesterday (Dec 27) announced that they will be installing a new sensor system to catch offenders. The new sensor system will first measure the distance between vehicles when they approach the car park gantries and a camera will start recording once it detected a possible tailgating occurrence. Motorcyclists who bypass the gantries by going under or beside the gate arm will also be recorded.

The announcement came after HDB implemented two successful system at St George Road and Lompang Road, capturing 130 offending vehicles over 6 months, The new tailgating system will be implemented in 1,600 HDB car parks using Electronic Parking System from June 2018 onward. HDB did not reveal how much the island-wide implementation will cost.

State media lauded the tailgating system as “high tech”, when similar tailgating system detecting human bodies are already implemented in Australia gyms for more than a decade.
