According to official figures from the Public Utility Board (PUB) severe flooding hit 9 locations in the eastern region of Singapore this morning (Jan 8). The flood lasted up to an hour and reached as high as 50cm at around 9.30am affected roads in Tampines, Upper Changi, Bedok, Kallang and Eunos. Commuters were seen standing on the seats at many affected bus stops due to the knee-level height water level.

PUB also reported that the canals in Sungei Tongkang, Sungei Kallang and Bedok Canal were full and issued a “high flood risk” warning. Several cars in various locations stalled in the floodwater with the Land Transport Authority issuing several traffic incident warnings at the time of flooding.

The flooding is one of the most severe Singapore had in recent years as flash flooding normally subsided in less than 20 minutes. In the past three years, Singapore has averaged nine flood days a year, with rainfall levels reaching 200mm to 300mm in some places.

PUB earlier in Nov 2017 identified and issued a checklist to 100 construction sites, saying that they will start inspecting nearby drains are unobstructed.  In 2009, Minister Yaacob Ibrahim claimed that flooding in Singapore happens only 1 in 50 years.
