Workers’ Party MP Pritam Singh today (Feb 15) announced that the outstanding financial issues at Aljunied-Hougang Town Council has been cleared. “All audits points resolved”, titled the announcement, and in addition the new financial system is now fully operational.
The Opposition town council was deliberately tripped by the ruling party-controlled Ministry of National Development, whose Minister Lawrence Wong repeatedly alleged that the WP is guilty of corruption. Despite the scathing allegations, no police report was made and even the independent audit by accounting firm KPMG did not suggest any misappropriation of town council funds.
Aljunied-Hougang Town Council’s woes started with the withdrawal of a financial system software by a PAP-owned company AIMS. The financial records were thrown into disarray after the former PAP town council sabotaged the WP when they lost the GRC.
The town council issue have taken headlines on state media in recent years, with the ruling party PAP Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Town Council filing a S$33 million lawsuit against 3 WP MPs – Pritam Singh, Low Thia Kiang and Sylvia Lim. The move is designed to unseat the three popular Opposition leaders, who have proven to be favourites among voters.
