Nurul Nasihah was suspended and effectively expelled from school for wearing the hijab in 2002.
Her parents had tried to enroll her at a madrasah but with the limited places, she was unable to be admitted.

The Malay MPs and Minister supported the government’s ban and told her to remove her hijab.

The family was pressured by the government over and over again to remove her hijab.

In August 2002, after months of harassment, and Nasihah denied education for wearing hijab, the family migrated to Australia.

Here, 13 years on, Nasihah and her mother share their account of what happened, what she is doing now and their hopes for Muslims in Singapore.
