The Malaysian parents of deceased NSF Kok Yuen Chin were denied access to the full video footage at the time of his death. According to state media Straits Times, the auntie said the Singapore government censored the videos and show the deceased family only the “good part” where the group was celebrating with a cake:
“Perhaps they just showed us the most important parts. But I think viewing it all will really help us understand it.”
Unknown of their rights to sue the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the low income family said they received only the NSF insurance payout. Although they declined to reveal the amount, it is believed they have received S$150,000 from the group NSF insurance. The Malaysian father who works as a construction worker said he won’t be attending the coroner’s report in court as he had to work.
The Singapore government did not make any compensation to the Malaysian permanent resident deceased.
On May 14 this year, Kok Yuen Chin was thrown into a water well by his superiors as part of a “ritual celebration” on the last day of his conscription service. The NSF who already informed the group that he could not swim then drowned after being thrown into the well.
According to former SCDF NSFs, the “ritual celebration” sometimes have more absurd activities like anal penetration, water dunking and cage locking.
