Three leaders of Singapore’s leading opposition party Workers’ Party will have to defend themselves in court today over (Oct 5) alleged mishandling of S$33 million in town council funding. The civil suit was lodged by the ruling party PAP-controlled town councils – through a fake “independent panel” filled with government cronies – after the police cleared the opposition MPs of criminal wrongdoings.
It is unknown who is sitting in the “independent panel” appointed by the ruling party dictatorship.
According to the PAP prosecution sheet, the three senior WP leaders – Secretary General MP Pritam Singh, Chairman MP Sylvia Lim, former Secretary General MP Low Thia Khiang – should be made to pay back more than S$33 million approved for town council works. The PAP panel alleged that it is corruption when the general manager of the town council set up her own company to contract town council works for the opposition-held town council.
However, the general manager of every PAP town council is also similarly an employee of the managing agent company that contracts town council works. The situation surrounding the WP was also different as the ruling party-controlled town council service provider withdrew its services when the opposition party won the constituency for the first time in 2011. At that time, no managing agent wanted to provide services to the opposition-held ward, and the WP had no choice but to engage the only company created by its general manager.
Charging the WP MPs for corruptions is dictator Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s only way to get back the opposition stronghold of Aljunied and Hougang. As the PAP is unable to win in the general elections, the dictatorship was thinking of stealing the seats through the judiciary route. The PAP’s attempt to unseat the WP MPs was blocked when both the auditor and police’s commercial division found no act of wrongdoing.
