Singapore’s Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan has announced his resignation with no successor to take over his disaster of a ministry. The PAP millionaire minister will no longer contest in the next General Election, to the cheers of Singaporean commuters’ pockets.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was unable to identify any taker for Transport Minister, as nobody volunteered. This is the second time the Transport Minister resigned, after Lui Tuck Yew in 2015.
Minister Khaw Boon Wan screwed up the Transport Ministry under his watch since 2015, with public transport fares raised every year. Train fares have increased by over 20% since 2015.
The train fares rose despite record profits posted by SBS Transit and SMRT.
Train company SMRT was given a billion dollar bailout by the government, after facing mounting losses from failing train infrastructures. For over 15 years, SMRT did not maintain the tracks and train vehicles resulting in serious damages to the train network and occurrence of train breakdowns.
Under Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore also saw its first train collision that saw 26 injured. The minister also covered up an embarrassing manufacturing defects with 26 trains bought from China in 2016. Minister Khaw Boon Wan made the decision to buy China trains instead of the reliable Japanese Kawasaki trains Singapore had.
