Former army general Minister Chan Chun Sing shot himself in his foot today calling for Singaporeans to not vote for his ruling party if they think the government did not do well in the coronavirus outbreak:
“Voters in the coming election will get to judge whether the Government had performed up to par in tackling the virus. Every vote that we get from fellow Singaporeans will be a signal to us — whether we have done well, or we have not done well.”
Singapore has the world’s highest infection rate per million, with more than 43,000 confirmed cases today. The country is still reporting hundreds of new cases each day, and Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam, recently dropped Singapore out of their travel bubble proposal.
When questioned about widespread criticisms against the government, Minister Chan Chun Sing blamed the virus for “having many unknowns” and said the government is “not perfect”:
“There are still many unknowns about the virus and that the taskforce is not afraid to put on record our accomplishments and shortcomings in dealing with the crisis. We never profess that everything we do is perfect.”
Singapore is currently sitting under a S$100 billion deficit.
Minister Chan Chun Sing also added criticisms is not important, and claimed that the PAP have “better ideas”:
“We can pass many comments on how this is handled but at the end of the day, the question is not who can make what criticisms… but who has the better ideas and who can deliver, not just with hindsight, but with foresight.”
None of the PAP candidates are wearing a face mask in public, openly breaching COVID rules. Minister Chan Chun Sing and his Tanjong Pagar GRC team took down their masks for photo taking.
