The latest winner of Miss Universe Singapore for 2015 has been competed with and crowned in an undisclosed close-door dinner ballroom. This is the first time a Miss Universe Singapore is picked without the television coverage and publicised selection done yearly since its inception in 1951. The decision to go private and closed-door for the recruitment, selection and crowning is made by the new national director Nuraliza Osman.
Nuraliza Osman is a 2002 Miss Universe Singapore winner and the lawyer blamed the main reason for having the closed-door selection is the lack of time:
”If you want to maximise your chances of placing in the top 15 in the Miss Universe pageant, what do you do with the limited time you have? Run a local show in a dinner ballroom — or get as many girls as possible, pick a winner and spend the most amount of time you can developing and training a strong delegate? That is our strategy… we’ve used the same formula year after year and it hasn’t succeeded.”
However, the closed-door selection may result in speculations of corruption and the lack of recruitment advertisement will definitely lower the standards in the beauty contest.
