SMRT today (Nov 17) blamed “material quality” for a cracked glass barrier panel at One-North station along the Circle Line yesterday.
SMRT’s spokesperson Patrick Nathan did not explain further how the glass barrier cracked or whether if SMRT is going to replace all similar glass barriers made from the same material. There is also no mention of contractor or supplier involved although many speculated that the glass were sourced from China.
According to the press release, only the front side facing the train was broken while the platform-facing surface was “unaffected”.
Although the affected area was condoned off, some commuters were worried that the severely-cracked glass panel may explode outwards into the platform like a grenade shrapnel when a train travel at high speed.
