SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek blew his own trumpet at the Singapore Rail Technology Conference held this morning (Nov 18) claiming that the North-South and East-West MRT lines had its best-recorded performance in 29 years before the breakdown in October.

According to his statistics, Desmond Kuek said the North-South and East-West lines “achieved” 144,000 train-km before breakdown – a 29-year record, he claimed.

Despite having more frequent paralyzing train delays and breakdowns, the former army general made claims about having a more reliable train system in his speech. Desmond Kuek said that Singapore will soon reach the Hongkong-standard of 400,000 train-km by 2018:

“We are working hard to achieve this, and are encouraged by the steady progress alreafy made.”

There is no comment on the lack of railway maintenance capabilities of SMRT particularly over the recent case of “mysterious interference signal”, which saw severe train delays on the Circle Line down for a week.
