Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro who built Cuba passed away at age 90 yesterday (Nov 25). While the Cuban state media did not specify his cause of death, it is likely due to an intestinal ailment he was suffering from since 2006 when he was alive.
Fidel Castro ruled Cuba for 49 years from 1959 to 2008 with an iron fist. The former communist leader jailed his critics for dissent and monopolised the media the same manner former Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew did. In 2008, citing poor health, Fidel Castro passed his powers to his younger brother Raul Castro. Despite being technically at war with the United States, Cuba is a successful South American state with comprehensive assistance in healthcare and education to the majority poor.
Cuba under his younger brother 85-year-old Raul Castro has been warming up relationships with United States, including a visit by US President Barack Obama in 2016. The leader signaled his intention to retire in 2018 and hand over powers to his successor and current vice-president Miguel Diaz-Canel.
