Blaming Malaysia for raising toll charges in 1 November 2016, Singapore Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan told Parliament today (Jan 9) that Singapore will raise the road charge between Malaysia-Singapore link ways.

The Singapore Transport Minister said that it is a “long-standing policy” to raise road charges whenever Malaysia raise theirs:

“Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia via the checkpoints at Woodlands and Tuas have paid an estimated RM13.9m (S$4.48m) in road charges between Nov 1 and Dec 20. Singapore has a long-standing policy of matching any levy, tolls or fees imposed on vehicles crossing into Malaysia. Details of the matching charge will be announced soon.”

Minister Khaw Boon Wan, an ex-Malaysian from Penang who has never served National Service in Singapore, said that Singapore raising the road charges will send a warning to Malaysia:

“This is to ensure that Malaysia takes into consideration our response whenever they raise their tolls or introduce a new levy.”
