Directing his comments at the Workers’ Party-held Aljunied GRC, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean wax lyrical about integrity and the interests for residents in his interview on yesterday (August 2) at a community event.
“We want a team that can look after the town council and make sure its financials are in good order, payments are made and that there are no chronic deficits in the financials. We want to look for candidates who have some financial background so that they can scrutinise accounts properly, and people with legal training who understand what they need to do. Then again, you can have many lawyers, but you need to do what you are supposed to do (as MPs). Most important, we want people who have integrity and have the interest of residents at heart. Then again, you can have many lawyers, but you need to do what you are supposed to do (as MPs).

Aljunied GRC have been hit by independent reports from the Auditor-General’s Office (AGO) saying the Opposition Town Council have several lapses in their accounting, but not amounting to corruption and criminal charges. However, Aljunied GRC’s lapses paled in compared to several government ministries under the ruling PAP Government, which involved police investigation from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau.
DPM Minister Teo Chee Hean did not comment about the lapses faced by other government ministries.
