The Singapore Government-controlled media Shin Ming Daily News speculated that Potong Pasir SMC will be absorbed into Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the next election because of low population. In an interview by The Straits TImes, the Chinese paper quoted Professor Eugene Tan from Singapore Management University saying that Potong Pasir has too small a population, at 17,385, to remain as a SMC, as compared to the average population of 25,000 in other SMCs.

Other “political analysts” interviewed also expressed opinions saying Potong Pasir SMCs will be absorbed into Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the next election.
Another SMC that they speculated will be removed is Joo Chiat SMC, because there is no HDB housing in the constituency.
Potong Pasir SMC and Joo Chiat SMC holds the worst performance by the PAP candidates, at 50.6% and 51% which resulted in two Opposition Non-constituency MPs. It is very likely Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will remove the two SMCs in the next election as he might lose them to the Opposition.
