Singapore’s only legalized media company Mediacorp self-awarded its subsidiary companies Channel News Asia and Today with “News Story of the Year”, “Journalist of the Year” and other news awards. The awards are presented by the Minister of Communication and Information, Yaacoob Ibrahim.
In the latest press accuracy ranking conducted in August by Reporters Without Border, Singapore’s media ranks 153th in the world. Mediacorp and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) are owned by Temasek Holdings, whose CEO is the wife of the Prime Minister.
Mediacorp is under the regulation of the state censorship ministry, Ministry of Communications and Information, which regulates the media via the Newspaper Act. Editors of SPH are politically affiliated and propaganda tool of the Singapore government. The Singapore mainstream media is often used to launch personal attacks against political opponents of the ruling PAP party, and at the same time to promote government leaders.
