An executive-level employee for social service centre Tembusu Home cheated seven residents of the destitute home of over S$220,000 from their life savings. Between May 2014 and Jan 2015, Chiang Zhao Xiang, 31, was entrusted with control over belongings of seven elderly residents of Tembusu Home.

The assistant superintendent then made withdrawals of between S$8,000 to S$99,000 from each of the seven victims, and lied to them claiming the money is needed for assistance or to pay bills. On 27 Nov 2014, Chiang Zhao Xiang told a resident that he needed S$10,000 to pay for the victim’s mother’s hospital bills. On 1 Dec 2014, Chiang Zhao Xiang told another victim, who is now deceased, that he needed money to help a woman and he received S$22,000 in cash.

Chiang Zhao Xiang is currently out on a S$20,000 bail and has indicated his intention to plead guilty on the next court hearing on March 1. The cheat is facing up to 15 years in jail for criminal breach of trust.
